It’s like when Pokemon Mystery Dungeon first came out no one expected it to have a great story, but you damn well know it does. I know it doesn’t look much different from the rest of Steam’s JRPG wasteland at a cursory glance, but… there’s something good in this book, I swear. You can’t judge a book by its cover, but the cover is what markets the material inside. No, it’s not visually distinct, and no, it doesn’t have a unique gameplay gimmick that revolutionizes turn-based combat.

To get the obvious out of the way, it’s an RPG Maker game through and through, with plenty of stock assets, a mostly-stock battle system, though some clear thought has been put into mob drops, item distribution, character movesets, and encounters. That’s always a nice place to land on the JRPG roulette. Whatever the reason, I’m glad we get a party of reasonably normal people that don’t just exist to sell figures and posters, and that slant more adult than teenage in attitude. Well, the story has a very anti-oppression focus, so I guess objectification of the main characters would’ve harmed the game’s message a bit. No, it’s an all-female cast (plus one boy and an older man who fills a sort of… Frog from Chrono Trigger role) without any of the pandering or sexualization you’ll have come to expect from the genre, which… again, is hard to comprehend considering there’s a literal sex scene toggle in the options menu. I suppose part of that is a result of the largely all-female cast, but then any Blue Reflection player can tell you that’s not a guaranteed fanservice-preventer. But if you’re someone like me who doesn’t find that stuff appealing but isn’t offended by it, it’s far more innocuous than something like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which… feels weird to say, context considering. Is this a game for people who can’t stand skimpy-clothed characters and immature innuendo-based humour? Probably not. The one crucial difference-maker is how accepting you are of sexualized content. If you’re a stickler for game mechanics however, you might not be as forgiving as I. I don’t get wrapped up in emotions when I play games, so if you’re the emotional type, expect this to be way more impactful than I make out. My average game rating sits somewhere between 4/10 and 5/10, so… assume the things I praise are better than what I say, and treat the things I complain about as petty complaints towards aspects of the game you won’t care about or notice. I have no idea how, but total playtime varied from 30 to 80 hours, so maybe 31 hours is a generous estimate.īefore we get deep into the review, I think some context is important. In total, it took me 31 hours to beat, and that’s including all the optional dungeons, however I haven’t touched New Game+, and I imagine it’ll be at least a little bit longer than that if you don’t skip the adult content… However, I saw a couple of my friends were playing it, and it took them 40 hours to get to where I had gotten by the end of my first play session. I’m the kind of person who takes a break and then never returns, a lot of my favourite JRPGs are games I’ve never even finished and never plan to go back to, so getting me to binge is a great sign. The hardest part of getting into a JRPG, to me, is simply finding the hook that gets me to commit. Then I immediately ended up spending a whole 12 hours on it. So initially I wanted to give it a quick try, just to see if it was for me. Along the way, you team up with oppressed peoples from both races and uncover the great inequality plaguing the continent. Even the synopsis sounds rather generic you’re a Demon in a classic cycle of Human vs Demon warfare, making one last stand to keep your species alive. It is… a regular-looking RPG Maker MV game, originally released with adult content, that might not strike the general Steam browser as anything special.

#World of demons ending free
Remembering that I’d also heard a lot of hype around it back in January from some old friends who play a lot of JRPGs, I bookmarked it to come back to when I had free time. While I was working away at a game of my own, I briefly glanced at a lengthy positive review of a game named ‘Demons Roots’ on the JRPG subreddit.
